Let’s talk about the nutritional value of beans! Most people look at beans as a side at a Mexican restaurant, or as a healthy side that can be served many ways. What you may not know is that beans are an amazing superfood- packed with protein, antioxidants, and (complex) carbs, they are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat. They can steal the show in some bariatric friendly recipes.
After weight loss surgery, packing in protein is a high priority, especially during the first couple of weeks post-op. Protein in vital in your weight loss, as well as helping to keep you from losing hair after weight loss surgery. It takes longer to break down proteins, so protein dense foods will keep you feeling full much longer than other options.
Beans should be a pantry staple for all bariatric surgery patients. Here’s more about the nutritional value of beans:
Beans are high in protein.
Half a cup of beans contains roughly 7 grams of protein, which is about the same as the amount of protein in an ounce of meat. After weight loss surgery, beans are a great substitute for meat during the early stages of your bariatric diet.
Beans are a good source of fiber.
Eating beans is a wonderful way to incorporate fiber into your weight loss surgery diet. Fiber helps with digestion, can help you feel more full for longer (can prevent overeating), and keep blood sugar spikes at bay.
Beans are high in polyphenols.
Polyphenols are a class of antioxidants that are known to help reduce high blood pressure and sore muscles. Beans are a healthy food that can continue to contribute to better heart health.
