Question for our readers: Do you put beans in your chili? Here in Texas, you might get kicked to the curb if you stir some beans into your chili recipe (seriously). 😅 It’s so fun to see how dishes vary from place to place!
Today, we are going against Texan tradition and putting your health first! We’ve got a protein packed bariatric chili recipe (yes, we included beans for protein) that’s sure to help you reach your daily protein goals within a bariatric portion size.

This recipe is perfect for the “Regular Foods” stage after bariatric surgery. This usually starts 5-6 weeks post-op. (But, of course, listen to your doctor AND your body) During this “Regular Foods” stage, you are suggested to eat high protein, low carb meals. – Like this bariatric chili.
This bariatric chili recipe allows you to meet your protein goals, in a small portion of food- and did we mention- its delicious!
You can add seasoning to your liking. Also, this recipe makes several portions! Quick tip: Instead of storing your leftovers in one big container, portion them out in meal prep Tupperware. That way you can just grab your meal and go! Lunches for your work or school week- done.

High Protein Bariatric Chili Recipe
1 Tbsp olive oil (or you can use cooking spray instead)
1 lb ground beef
½ medium chopped onion
15.5 oz dark red kidney beans (don’t drain)
14-15 oz can diced tomatoes (don’t drain)
1 small jar chopped green chilis
¾ tsp garlic powder
¾ tsp ground cumin
2-4 tsp chili powder (depending on how spicy you like it)
1 cup water
1. Add cooking oil (or cooking spray) and ground beef to a pan on medium-high heat.
2. Brown ground beef
3. Drain fat and return to skillet
4. Add in onions & sauté until semi-translucent
5. Add one cream cheese ball at a time to bag. Shake to fully coat eachAdd in kidney beans, diced tomatoes, green chilis, and your seasonings; mix thoroughly.
6. Add in 1 cup of water
7. Bring to boil- and keep it boiling for 15-20 minutes.
8. Add cilantro or parsley to garnish. Serve & Enjoy!
