Why make bariatric recipes with Tuna?

Tuna is a great source of protein and we all know the importance of protein after weight loss surgery. Depending on how far out you are from surgery, your surgeon or someone on their staff should have given you a daily protein intake goal. Protein generally digests slower (keeping you fuller longer) and it’s very important for muscle mass. Not getting enough protein can slow your metabolism and we don’t want that!

Tuna Broccoli Bake

This bariatric recipe with tuna also has another protein source, broccoli. We called this a tuna broccoli bake, some people may call it a tuna broccoli casserole, either way, it’s a great recipe for life after weight loss surgery. Depending on how far out you are from your weight loss surgery, you may want to be careful with large chunks of broccoli. If you are just out of the puree phase and starting the soft food phase, broccoli may be a little hard to digest. So, please take it easy when trying something for the first time soon after surgery.

Tuna Stuffed Bell Peppers

This delicious bariatric recipe has also been called “bell pepper boats,” “tuna bell pepper boats,” or “tuna salad stuffed peppers.” The mixture that you stuff the bell peppers with is simply cottage cheese and packaged tuna from Safe Catch. We understand not all people are a fan of cottage cheese for the texture, so for half of a portion, we blended the cottage cheese to create a whipped texture for the mixture. This may become one of your go to bariatric recipes with tuna

Edamame Tuna Salad

If you are looking for a recipe that is easy and will fit into your bariatric meal plan, then this Edamame Tuna Salad should be added to your bariatric meal prepping. Perfect for life after VSG, life after gastric bypass or any other weight loss surgery, this recipe is a different flavor profile and will help with boredom on the bariatric diet.

The miso and chili oil kick this weight loss recipe up a notch- it tastes nothing like your average tuna salad. After the last stage of your post-surgery diet you could even use this recipe as a dip- call it “tuna roll dip” or “tuna roll unwrapped” and dip your favorite pepper or the whole edamame pod in it.

Tuna Casserole Bake

Another of our favorite bariatric recipes with tuna, is this Tuna Casserole Bake. With only 5 main ingredients (not including seasonings), this Tuna Casserole is easy, low calorie and affordable. Did I mention- no pasta noodles! and bariatric friendly?

You can use this as a snack dip, a filling for a tuna melt, the base of a tuna salad, you name it!

Ahi Tuna Tower

Presentation is everything, but this recipe is more than just picture perfect. Its flavors are sweet, with a mild salty taste, and a nice blend of textures. With the dramatic change in dieting after weight loss surgery, a common misconception that patients have regarding the new diet is, if you cut out calories, you cut out flavor. This recipe is the perfect example of changing minds and keeping stomachs satisfied.

Tasty Tuna Salad

The hot chinese mustard included in this recipe, along with all the other ingredients blended together creates a bloody mary-like taste when you combine the tomato juice. To our surprise, this recipe was very juicy and provided a light crunch from the chopped celery stalks and roasted red peppers. Overall, this recipe provides your mouth with a combination of delicious flavors and nutritional value.

Mediterranean Tuna Salad

After our third time re-creating the mediterranean tuna salad we realize how customizable this dish is. We substituted regular mayo for vegan mayo because it’s creamier and mixes very well with the other ingredients. Lastly, we know presentation is everything so, you can either serve on lettuce or multi-seed crips if you’re aiming for less carbs!

Tuna Cauliflower Rice Bake

We were tired of the same old same old, so we decided to mix it up with a unique flavor profile that we don’t get to enjoy often! Tandoori dishes offer succulent, smoky, and earthy flavors to whatever protein you choose to cook with it! For this recipe, we choose Safe Catch’s Tandoori Tuna! This was an easy decision considering Safe Catch’s unbeatably low mercury levels in their canned fish, all sustainably wild caught. This dish perfectly balances easy preparation and bold flavors, two of the most important traits bariatric recipes with tuna can have!
