How to get family exercise after weight loss surgery
Family exercise after weight loss surgery can help the bariatric patient, as well as the family
After surgery, we can all admit the weight loss journey isn’t as easy it seems. Successful weight loss requires patients to commit to a change in lifestyle and habits.
Something that can make your journey significantly more difficult OR easy is the support from your family and friends! Your family should be your biggest supporters as you work on changing your health and lifestyle. One way your family can support you after your gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery is to find fun ways to exercise together
There’s tons of fun ways to encourage your family to be active together. Exercising as a family doesn’t always mean fun-runs, walking a 5k, or working out together.

Fun Ways to Exercise with Your Family after Weight Loss Surgery
Gardening/Yard Work
Put the family to work! This is a great way to be active (and get some house work done). Whether it’s potting new plants, picking up leaves, or cleaning out the gutters, this is a great way for the whole family to stay on their feet after your bariatric surgery.
Have a Dance Party
Dancing is a great form of cardio and a great way for the whole family to have some fun while staying active. Put on some tunes in the living room, have everyone get up and groove, what a fun way to exercise! Maybe even put on a talent show for each member to showcase their moves or try the latest tiktok dance.
Limit Screen Time (for everyone in the family)
While using our phones, TV’s, and tablets is fun in moderation, they can promote sitting down for long periods of time. Limit screen time for the kids AND yourself! Set a timer or parental controls to remind yourself and the kiddos when to stop looking at your tech toys and get up!
Schedule Family Playtime
Whether it’s taking a walk after school and work, planning outside time, walking the family dog, or playing at the park, make family activity a priority. Set aside time each day for everyone to get together and play after weight loss surgery.
Go for a Swim
Swimming is a family hit and a very enjoyable way to stay active after weight loss surgery! This is one of those activities that doesn’t feel like exercise. If you don’t have a pool in your backyard, there are community pools, waterparks, and splash pads that include activities for a whole day of fun! Plus it’s a great way to cool off in the hot summer months.
Make a Treasure Hunt
Another creative way to get those steps in! You and your partner will do plenty of walking while you find places to hide items for the treasure hunt. Your kiddos get in their activity while hunting.
Plan a Family Hike
This activity is great for those who have older kids who are in middle school or high school. Taking a hike is a great way to teach appreciation for the outdoors and nature while staying active as a family unit after your weight loss surgery.
